At midnight (EST), British R&B singer Ella Mai dropped her long-awaited sophomore album Heart On My Sleeve. The album features Latto, Roddy Ricch, and Lucky Daye. (The album also has a surprise feature on the transition from “Fallen Angel” and “How” feat. Roddy Ricch that has R&B Twitter raving.)

Mai released her self titled debut album in 2018 after obtaining a record deal from viral covers. That project included hits like “Boo’d Up” & “Trip”. But with this project, it seems the London native is singing about a different kind of relationship—a good thing gone bad that’s too toxic.

On songs like “Break My Heart” (produced by D. Mile), “Fallen Angel” and “DFMU”, she sings about her strong feelings towards a love interest. She even thinks it may be “too good to be true” (“Fallen Angel”). But then later on the album, we hear tracks like “Leave You Alone”, “Sink or Swim”, or “Fading Out“, Mai expresses having less faith in love.

As far as vocals, some of the best moments on the album are “A Mess” feat. Lucky Daye, “Hide”, and “Power Of A Woman“. (I think her voice sounds the best on tracks that are more stripped down.) The background vocals are tight overall and sometimes even playful (“Feels Like”).

Nonetheless, the project showcases a new side of Ella Mai’s vocal range and musicality. The sound is reminiscent of the first album with elements of a new evolved version of Mai. Ella Mai has proved herself again with Heart On My Sleeve. Follow @ellamai on Instagram and Twitter to stay tuned.
